What is MRSA ?

|
MRSA is the abbreviated name given for a number of strains of the bacteria known as
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
Staphylococcus aureus is commonly known as “staph”. MRSA is often called “golden staph”.
People carry staphylococcus aureus on the surface of the skin and inside the nose. Most
people are blissfully unaware they are carrying it and it is usually harmless. Sometimes
though it can cause infection and serious illness.
As the name implies, MRSA is resistant to a range of antibiotics including methicilin. This
makes it more challenging to treat. Effective treatment usually entails the application of
more powerful drugs to help rid the patient of the infection. The application of stronger
drugs in itself makes the ailment more dangerous.
MRSA is often referred to in the media as a type of “super bug".
